Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS)

Computer Vision syndrome is the most common problem faced by software engineers and others who work on computers. Signs and Symptoms of CVS:  1. Red, watery, irritating eyes.  2. Tired, aching or heavy eyelids.  3. Problems with focussing, objects seem blurred.  4. Muscle spasms of the eye  5. Headache  6. Backache    Cause for CVS:   Continuous flexing of the eye’s focussing muscles creates fatigue and the burning tired-eyes feeling.  How to prevent Computer vision syndrome:  1. Use computer eyeglasses. An anti-reflective coating (AR) is also highly recommended.   2. Place the computer terminal below the level of your eyes.   3. Constant conscious blinking when working on computers can help to make the eyes comfortable.   4. Remember the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, one should look away from the screen into the distance (20 feet) for 20 seconds to rest the eye muscles.  Ideal computer setting:  1. The working distance from the eye to screen should be set between 20 inches and 26 inches.  2. Viewing angle for the screen should be 10 degrees to 15 degrees below straight ahead gaze position.  3. Room lighting should be free of glare.  4. Place computer screen at 90 degree angle to windows whenever possible.   Reduce room lighting so that screen brightness and contrast can be reduced to comfortable levels.  Source: Indian E xpress   … [Read more...]
