Gingivitis- Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Teeth are the symbols for health. Tooth is made up Dentine and externally it is covered by a layer called Enamel, the hardest substance in the body. Inside the tooth is Pulp which contains number of blood vessels, supplying blood to the tooth. The first gum layer adherent to the tooth is known as Gingiva. The root of the tooth is kept in position in the bone socket with the help of Para dental Ligament.

If the Gingiva is infected and is neglected without taking treatment, and subsequently the ligament and the root are also got infected, finally, the entire tooth will fall down like a wall. The infection of gingival is called Gingivitis.

Dental Plaque: After rising from the bed in the morning, the first layer that appears on the tooth is called Plaque. There are number of chances for the bacteria to accumulate on this plaque. Unless we remove this plaque from time to time, it gets hardened and sticks tightly to the tooth and appears as yellow in colour.

Causes of Gingivitis:

1. Presence of long teeth since birth in some persons. Due to this the gap between the upper and the lower teeth is decreased and the teeth upper edges are constantly rubbing against one another, leading to the damage of the gums and infection occurs in gums.

2. Breaking of tooth in accidents, leading to infection of the pulp.

3. Irregular tooth formation: There are gaps in between the teeth and f food particles get accumulated there leading to infection of the gums.

4. Tobacco smoking spoils the gums and infected by the bacteria.

5. Diabetes, leukemia, Hemophilia, Hyperthyroidism, deficiency of vitamin C and of vitamin K etc,- causes bleeding from the gums and then to infection.

5. Deficiency of vitamin D: It causes brittleness in the tooth which makes it prone to infection.

6. Taking more sweets invites bacteria to act on the teeth and get them spoiled.

Symptoms and Signs of Gingivitis:

Bad breath

Swollen gums

Bleeding

Loose tooth are most common symptoms.

Actually what happens in gingivitis?

The front part of the Gingiva is first of all getting infected. At this stage occasionally slight bleeding occurs. Afterwards gingival becomes swollen and becomes soft and appears as reddish shining area. Due to this a gap is formed between the gum and the tooth and gets infected with bacteria and this condition is known as Para dental Abscess.

If it is not treated in time, the tooth becomes loose (as there is no support from the gums and ligaments), and may come out at any time.

Chronic Gingivitis will cause the infection of blood vessels which in turn infect the Endothelium of the heart known as Infective Endocarditis, a serious disease.

Gingivitis Treatment:

1 X-RAY of the tooth is necessary to find the exact condition of the tooth and depending on it, root canal treatment is done.

2. If upper portion of the tooth is infected, filling of the tooth with cement (a chemical substance) is done.

Precautions to be taken:

1. Brushing of the teeth at least for two times (morning and evening) is highly essential.

2. Rinsing of the mouth with mouth washing solution should be done daily.

3. Consult the dental surgeon for every six months, so that if there is any infection which can be treated in the early stages.

4. Food: Take lemon and orange fruits which contain more quantities of vitamin or Vitamin C tablets can be taken.

5. Milk and eggs are to be taken as they contain Calcium and vitamin D, which are essential in the formation of teeth.

6. Leafy vegetables have to be taken to prevent anemia and other blood related diseases.
