Indian Government is launching an ambitious programme – National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke (NPCDCS). Through this programme, screening tests for cancer, diabetes and heart conditions will be done for 7 crore Indians (aged more than 30 years).
Who will bear costs?
80% by centre and 20% by states.
Budget allocation: Rs 1230.9 crore
Diabetes and heart diseases: Rs. 500 crore
Cancer control: 731.5 crore
Where will be implemented?
States: 15
Districts: 100 districts
Community health centres: 100
Sub-centres: 20,000
Comment: Wonderful initiative by Government. India is already diabetic capital and these lifestyle diseases are responsible for low productivity. Screening and increase in awareness helps to prevent many diseases. Many poor rural Indians neither aware nor afford such screening tests.
