World Kidney Day – March 13, 2008

 World Kidney Day took place on March 13 to increase awareness on kidney diseases among general population. This day was celebrated to stress about the importance of early detection in reducing the impact of kidney diseases on general population. If we can diagnose kidney diseases early, we can avoid dialysis or kidney transplantation and prevent end stage renal failure. More than 1.5 million people are living on dialysis or kidney transplantation.   World Kidney Day is a joint initiative of the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) and the International Federation of Kidney Foundations (IFKF) and is held every second Thursday in March. World Kidney Day was launched in 2006 to raise awareness among general population. Diabetes and Hypertension are the major chronic diseases that are responsible for increase in incidence of kidney diseases. People with kidney diseases are 10 times more likely to develop heart attacks and strokes. Around 10% of world population is living with Kidney diseases i.e. more than 500 million people are suffering from some form of kidney disease. Kidneys are amazing organs that filter about 200 litres of blood every day.  Basic tests to find kidney diseases: 1. Serum Creatinine - Single most important test to determine kidney function. 2. Blood pressure. 3. Blood glucose level (Diabetes).
